“I did my best to keep you from crossing paths with this world. And I shall do my best to protect you now that you have.”
Jessamin has been an outcast since she moved from her island home of Melei to the dreary country of Albion. Everything changes when she meets Finn, a gorgeous, enigmatic young lord who introduces her to the secret world of Albion’s nobility, a world that has everything Jessamin doesn’t—power, money, status…and magic. But Finn has secrets of his own, dangerous secrets that the vicious Lord Downpike will do anything to possess. Unless Jessamin, armed only with her wits and her determination, can stop him.
This beautifully written novel by Kiersten White further solidifies my confidence in her ability to spin a fantastically magical story.
Illusions of Fate takes place in the dreary but mysterious country of Albion. Our main character, Jessamin, is from a tropical island regarded as a place of uncivilized savages, known as Melei. Jessamin has traveled to Albion to study at the schools there and work in a hotel kitchen in order to stake out her independence from her mother back in Melei.
Only…things don’t go exactly as she planned. She meets a mysterious stranger and events take a turn for the weirder (and scarier). Jessa’s character development over the course of this one book is truly wonderful. She goes from frigid and pessimistic to warm, but formidable.
There is magic in this world that White has created and it can be wielded for good or evil. Will Jessamin end up on the wrong side of this magic? What will she gain or lose by getting caught up in that mysterious world?
My heart swelled & shattered so many times that I lost count. The relationships formed and characters we meet elicit visceral reactions & emotions in a way that I haven’t experienced in a long time. I can’t wait to see how this story is received by her readers. I truly hope they adore it as much as I did! I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and a setting in an era that is Victorian-esque.
