Rise by Anna Carey (2013)
The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.
Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust…and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.
BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): I loved this Trilogy!
Anna Carey really outdid herself on this trilogy. This is a main character and series that will stick with me for a long time. I want to sum it up with one sentence before I go on so you know how urgently you need to read this trilogy.
The last page tore my heart out of my chest and put it back together again.
I won’t say which of the three books, but every single chapter did something to that effect. I was on an emotional roller coaster. I’ll admit when I read the synopsis, it didn’t grab me for some reason. I thought, “Ugh, plague…not glamorous. I need something with action!!” Well, I got what I asked for.
In the first book, Eve, you’re introduced to a young girl that follows the rules, keeps her head down, and excels at the School for all girls. And then..Eve starts to question everything she has ever known.. Cut to Eve being out in the wild, unknown, and scary world with nothing but her name. She just wants to get to the City…the capital of New America. If only it was that easy. After meeting a mysterious stranger who saves her…you can feel the author pressing down a little harder on the accelerator. [Strap yourself in.]
In the second installment of the series, Once takes you along on Eve’s journey of self-discovery and seeking refuge. She’s wanted – but why? Her reasons and ways of thinking – are they spot on or way off? But what do we learn from in Once? We learn that no one ever said that sacrifices would be easy.
In the final book of the trilogy, Eve has gone from shy girl to full on rebel. But it’s not just her own life in her hands..she has others to worry about. The ending of the book had my heart in shreds. She is reunited with some people, she loses some people, and she finds out secrets.. OoO lala!
I highly recommend this series to anyone who wants a post-apocolytic and dystopian rolled into one. The MC is a strong female heroine – the storyline is insanely intricate and well thought out – and the suspense is palpable. I easily gave every book 5 stars and I plan on reading them again one day. [Not to mention the covers are beautiful!]
