They hear the most silent of footsteps.
They are faster than anything you’ve ever seen.
And They won’t stop chasing you…until you are dead.

Amy is watching TV when it happens, when the world is attacked by Them. These vile creatures are rapidly devouring mankind. Most of the population is overtaken, but Amy manages to escape—and even rescue “Baby,” a toddler left behind in the chaos. Marooned in Amy’s house, the girls do everything they can to survive—and avoid Them at all costs.

After years of hiding, they are miraculously rescued and taken to New Hope, a colony of survivors living in a former government research compound. While at first the colony seems like a dream with plenty of food, safety, and shelter, New Hope slowly reveals that it is far from ideal. And Amy soon realizes that unless things change, she’ll lose Baby—and much more.

In The After is difficult to put into words. I was absolutely blown away by it. It really wasn’t what I was expecting, but it exceeded my expectations. I would categorize this book as apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic and science fiction. I hesitate to throw the word “dystopian” around because it has been overused and misrepresented. I’ll leave that sub-genre up to someone else to call this book.

Amy is the main character who used to be a regular teenager with a hippie, earth-loving dad and a secretive scientist mom who liked to keep a gun in the closet (oh, and did I mention the electric fence around the yard?). The first thing I thought when I started reading was, “Awesome!! An author who isn’t afraid to write about aliens! I know they aren’t glamorous and sexy like vampires and werewolves, but this is going to be great!”…then everything changed.

I don’t want to write spoilers, but this story is about a young girl who survives an invasion, attacks, and even meets an unlikely companion along the way. She turns into a survivalist at the ripe old age of 14 because she absolutely has to in order to stay alive. Amy encounters challenges that most of us would shiver at the thought and makes tough decisions that I can’t say that I would be brave enough to do.

About half-way through the book, there is a HUGE, and I mean EPIC, plot twist that had be reeling. I had to make sure I was reading the same book! I loved it! I was wondering where all of this was leading…what was going to happen…what caused the invasion…did anyone survive except Amy? Oh, I got exactly what I asked for…in an unlikely reappearance of some key characters.

I know it has to be super cheesy, but this totally applies…(you’ll understand when you read it) “JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO GO BACK INTO THE WATER”. *BIG WINK* <

I would recommend this book over and over again. I can’t wait for the YA community to get their hands on it, because I have a feeling they will absolutely LOVE IT. All I need to know is…WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Alexa Y. - This book sounds VERY exciting! I haven’t heard too much about it, but I do like survival stories. And occasionally, I like stories that leave you asking WHAT HAPPENS NOW, so that’s two for two. Even though I’m not too keen on post-apocalyptic reads, I may have to make an exception for this one!ReplyCancel
