Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy.
Tessa Gray should be happy – aren’t all brides happy?
Yet as she prepares for her wedding, a net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute.
A new demon appears, one linked by blood and secrecy to Mortmain, the man who plans to use his army of pitiless automatons, the Infernal Devices, to destroy the Shadowhunters. Mortmain needs only one last item to complete his plan. He needs Tessa. And Jem and Will, the boys who lay equal claim to Tessa’s heart, will do anything to save her.
So, Cassie…this is how it ends, eh? Well, let me start off by saying that I haven’t had my soul torn apart by a book in a long time. However, Clockwork Princess was exactly what I needed. My emotions ranged from giggling/amused to rage to swooning and ending with a nice session of violent sobbing.
I could not have hoped for a better book. The storyline was so wonderfully done, but the real masterpiece was the relationship and character development throughout the trilogy. Personally, it was hard to choose between Team Jem and Team Will…but obviously that was the point…Tessa had the same problem. Will is such a tortured soul that loves Tessa and Jem so much that he sacrifices acting on his feelings for Tessa in order to keep them both happy.
The angst and urgency to find Tessa after she is kidnapped is palpable. I was sitting up straighter, hunched over my book in concentration, full of anxiety…I knew she had to be found. At the same time, worrying over Jem’s illness and his fate had me pulled in so many different directions. My heart hurt for all of them. It seemed to be a never-ending cycle of pain and love and sacrifice.
I will say that this is one of the most satisfying endings to a series I could have asked for. Regardless of your alliance with Team Will or Jem (I never knew which team I was on, I was too torn), you just want everyone to be happy. It does seem that with the conditions of Tessa’s immortality, Will & Jem’s bond and mortality that it feels impossible that anyone ends up happy…but hold out hope, fellow TID fans. I guarantee the ending of this book will cause such a visceral reaction that you will need time to decompress before the next book.
Bottom line: I absolutely and wholeheartedly LOVED this series. Cassandra Clare never fails to bring the ALL THE FEELS and paints such vivid imagery that I can’t say that I expected anything less than perfection.
